Our Australian Shepherd puppies mean the world to us and are raised in our home by our family where they receive lots of love and attention all day. They are handled extensively and socialized to a variety of sounds, textures, people and animals. As a trainer, I understand the importance of early socialization and this starts with the breeder.
We do ENS when the aussie puppies are 1 week old and follow a modified Puppy Culture program. We put emphasis on socialization with lots of people and other animals, recall, crate training, and resource guarding prevention. The program has a wonderful online program-please visit website to learn more and we highly recommend the video: Attention: Is the Mother of All Behaviors! This is a foundation behavior I practice first in all my dog training classes. https://shoppuppyculture.com/collections/all
1. We feed our Australian Shepherd puppies a very high quality natural diet. We do a combination of kibble, raw and Dr. Harvey's. We feel diet is very important and also affects their behavior dramatically. 2. We have showed our Australian Shepherds in working performance sports and confirmation and have them evaluated by various judges. I have shown our Australian Shepherds in rally obedience, confirmation (UKC), agility and also obtained CGC and CGCA. I have also dabbled in herding as well as tracking. 3. We genetically test for diseases that are common with Australian Shepherds. We have their hips and elbows x-rayed and then they are further evaluated by the OFA. Our Australian Shepherds see a veterinary ophthalmologist once a year for Eye CAER through OFA. We do luxating Patella's on our smaller aussies as well. 4. We socialize each Australian Shepherd puppy individually to different environments, people, and animals. 5. Each Aussie puppy will have been introduced to a crate. Crate training is an ongoing process and I recommend using a puppy pen to start. I will guide you though and teach you how to continue with the crate training and provide handouts. 6. Weather permitting we will start potty training our Australian Shepherd puppies. This is also an ongoing process and one cannot expect a puppy to be fully house trained until closer to a year old. All of our Australian Shepherd puppies are litter box trained-making it easier those first couple of months. We have put so much hard work and time into our breeding program to ensure families get the very best companion. Every breeding program has a goal. Show breeders are breeding for the perfect show dog, ranchers are breeding for the dog that is extremely biddable and has a keen eye for stock. The seeing eye is breeding for dogs that are going to be service dogs. I am a professional dog trainer and I see all sorts of behavioral problems in dogs that could have been avoided. Temperament is more genetic than environmental influence. That expression that the puppy can simply be trained or more socialized couldn't be further from the truth! Our program's#1 goal is temperament. I want my families to have an Aussie that is a lower drive, very easygoing, social and easy to live with.
We plan litters very carefully and with purpose. I usually am always keeping a pup to compete with and continue my vision of the line: hence the name Aislin. First and foremost, I value temperament. Australian Shepherds vary tremendously now and Miniature Australian Shepherds are having a lot of temperament issues and are either social butterflies or very reserved towards strangers. Being reserved is one thing, but being aggressive towards strangers is another. The Australian Shepherds and Miniature Australian Shepherds we breed are very social and we strive for this outgoing personality. I will not breed an Aussie that shows extreme fear or shyness. Our 2nd goal is health. All of our Australian Shepherds are tested for certain health problems associated with the breed. All of our breeding Australian Shepherds and Miniature Australian Shepherds will have their hips examined by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and/or Penn Hip. We also have genetic tests done for the following eye problems: CEA, PRA and HSF4. OFA Eye CAER are done yearly on all of our adults.
Australian Shepherds, like many collie breeds, may have certain drug sensitivities. Our dogs are all MDR1 tested and we will let you know what possibilities the pups could be. If you or anyone you know has a collie-type breed, please make sure they are aware of the sensitivities of the breed especially with ivermectin, which is a wormer and ACE . Since we live on a farm with livestock that are wormed constantly, we make sure all our dogs are tested. Dogs are curious animals, and love to eat other animals' stools and if they have the sensitivity it could be lethal. Even if they test Normal/Clear we have seen many cases where they still have a reaction to certain drugs. I truly believe no aussie no matter what the testing states can have a reaction. All of our Australian Shepherd puppies will stay with us until they are at least 8 week old. We have different training options if you would like us to put in the extra work that goes with raising a puppy and they can stay an additional 2-4 weeks. Please see the above links for additional information. If you choose the baseline package and would like to do all the work then we recommend that the puppy continue with puppy kindergarten classes so that you can learn the mechanical skills needed and to continue the socialization.
We don't choose the Australian Shepherd puppy for you, but will make recommendations based on your family, lifestyle, and overall goals. If we truly feel the Australian Shepherd puppy you choose is not the right match, we reserve the right to not sell you the puppy. We would only intervene like this if we believed in our hearts this wasn't the right match. We truly care about our puppies and our line and want only the very best for them. As professional dog trainers, we really understand canine behavior and how to predict certain patterns. Our judgment is in the best interest of the puppy and your family as well!
All companion Australian Shepherd puppies will be sold on spay/neuter contracts. All Australian Shepherd puppies will have been wormed with pyrantel starting at 4 and and then fenbendazole at 6 weeks and vaccinated with NeoPar at 5 weeks and distemper/parvo at 7.5 weeks. A follow up distemper/parvo (core) should be done at 12 week and after 16 weeks. Then at 20 weeks old-rabies.
Subsequently, we recommend a booster be given 1 year following vaccination and then titers performed every 3 years to determine when to vaccinate again.
